Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,823 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,823 m of the 2,992 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 566 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, then departed from runway 23 at RJTT Tokyo Haneda International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,294 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 328 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles southeast of RJTT Tokyo Haneda International Airport. The climb took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 140 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,017 feet above sea level to 41,388 feet above sea level, an increase of 40,370 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles southeast of Takahata in Yamagata-ken, Japan. This phase lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 126 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 11 miles southeast of Hanawa in Akita, Japan. The descent took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 166 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 41,009 feet above sea level to 1,360 feet above sea level, a decrease of 39,649 feet.
The final approach to runway 01L at RJCC New Chitose Airport was made from the south, with a heading of 353.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,276 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 01L, which had a length of 2,992 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 134 knots. The touchdown point was 147 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 126 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -166 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 10 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,740 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 443 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 48 minutes. The aircraft used 6,859 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft successfully landed at RJCC New Chitose Airport, demonstrating a high level of precision and control. The final approach to runway 01L was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 353.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,276 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 133 kt, registering at 134 kt. However, the touchdown point was 147 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 126 kt was also a bit faster than the desired speed, but the touchdown rate of -166 feet per minute (fpm) was within acceptable limits.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 8°C and a gentle wind of 3 kt at 10°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 kt, while the headwind component was 3 kt, which helped to stabilize the aircraft's approach. The runway length of 2,992 meters was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 1,740 meters, which accounted for 58% of the available runway.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled approach. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilots' ability to smoothly transition from the landing phase to the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was characterized by a high level of precision and control, with a score of 98.7% indicating a near-perfect performance.
