MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,035 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,035 ft of the 10,152 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,857 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A319, then departed from runway 05 at LPMA Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo. The takeoff distance was 4,946 feet, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 80°F and winds of 4 knots at 200°.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from an initial altitude of 1,032 feet above sea level to 37,088 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,056 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 121 nautical miles. The enroute climb started overhead Machico, Madeira, Portugal. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 31 minutes and covered a distance of 225 nautical miles. The cruise phase began at a latitude of 32.1789282 and a longitude of -14.4364893.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent from an altitude of 36,784 feet above sea level to 3,247 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,537 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles. The descent started 17 miles northwest of Essaouira, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco. Following the descent, the aircraft entered a brief level cruise phase, which lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. This phase began 9 miles southeast of Marrakesh, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco.
The final approach to runway 28 at GMMX Menara Airport was made from the east, heading 278.0° at 4 nautical miles and 746 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 28, which had a length of 10,152 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 134 knots. The touchdown point was 498 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 125 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -122 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 84°F and winds of 2 knots at 0°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 5,776 feet, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took approximately 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 471 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 86 minutes. The aircraft used 6,725 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at GMMX Menara Airport, achieving a high score of 98.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 278.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 746 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed smoothly, with the aircraft landing on runway 28, which has a length of 10,152 feet.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 134 knots. However, this did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown point was 498 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 125 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -122 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 84°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 0°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and headwind, making the landing even more challenging. The total landing distance of 5,776 feet was 57% of the runway length, which is a relatively efficient use of the available runway.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating excellent control and stability during the landing roll. Overall, the Airbus A319 performed well during the landing, with only minor deviations from the ideal performance.
