Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,320 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,320 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 223 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an SR22, then departed from runway 30 at KSMX Santa Maria Public Airport, Captain G Allan Hancock Field. The takeoff distance was 354 meters, which is 15% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 86 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot. The aircraft climbed to an altitude of 2,008 feet above sea level (asl) in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The enroute climb started overhead KSMX Santa Maria Public Airport, where the aircraft climbed from 772 feet asl to 2,008 feet asl, an increase of 1,235 feet in 1 minute. This was followed by a level cruise that lasted 3 minutes and covered 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 1,809 feet asl to 7,027 feet asl, an increase of 5,218 feet in 5 minutes, covering 11 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 13 miles east of Santa Maria and lasted 9 minutes, covering 27 nautical miles. The aircraft then began a descent from 6,995 feet asl to 2,829 feet asl, a decrease of 4,166 feet in 3 minutes, covering 10 nautical miles. Another level cruise started 4 miles south of L62 Elk Hills-Buttonwillow Buttonwillow, lasting 9 minutes and covering 18 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile north of Rosedale, where the aircraft descended from 2,831 feet asl to 1,080 feet asl, a decrease of 1,751 feet in 3 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles. The final level cruise started overhead KBFL Meadows Field Bakersfield, lasting 2 minutes and covering 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 30L at KBFL Meadows Field was made from the south east, heading 309.0° at 1 nautical mile and 334 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 65 knots and a touchdown rate of -174 feet per minute (fpm). The touchdown distance was 219 meters, and the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.0 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of departure, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot. The total landing distance was 415 meters, which is 31% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 12.6 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 79 nautical miles, taking 40 minutes, and the aircraft used 41 kilograms of fuel.
The SR22 aircraft successfully landed at KBFL Meadows Field, achieving a score of 90.0%. The final approach to runway 30L was conducted from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 309.0° at 1 nm and 334 ft above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 67 kt, but still within an acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 219 m was also good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing. The touchdown speed of 65 kt was also within the desired range, and the touchdown rate of -174 fpm was good, suggesting that the pilot had managed to slow down the aircraft smoothly.
However, there were a couple of minor issues with the landing. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.0 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's approach path. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 12.6 m from the centreline, which could have been caused by a slight drift in the aircraft's direction during the rollout.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind speed of 1 kt from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and headwind, making the landing conditions relatively straightforward. Overall, the pilot's performance was good, and the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of maintaining a more precise alignment with the runway centreline.
