Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,600 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,600 m of the 3,811 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 681 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 17R at Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago, Chile. The Airbus A319 took off with a takeoff distance of 1,008 meters, which accounted for 26% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the aircraft quickly gained altitude.
As the aircraft climbed, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and winds blowing at 11 knots from a direction of 149 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 9 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the airport, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 2,597 feet above sea level to 3,011 feet above sea level, an increase of 414 feet in less than a minute and covering a distance of less than a nautical mile.
After reaching the desired altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The cruise phase took place overhead the airport, where the aircraft maintained a steady altitude.
As the aircraft began its final approach to runway 17R, it was heading in a northerly direction at an altitude of 725 feet above ground level and a distance of 2 nautical miles from the runway. The local weather conditions during the final approach were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and winds blowing at 9 knots from a direction of 150 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 8 knots.
The aircraft landed on the runway with a threshold speed that was slightly above the target speed of 122 knots. The touchdown point was 258 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 107 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -112 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 1,512 meters, which accounted for 40% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft had maintained its alignment with the runway during the landing roll. The total flight distance was 8 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 5 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 7,430 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at SCEL Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, achieving a high score of 97.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 172.0° at 2 nautical miles and 725 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed smoothly on runway 17R, which has a length of 3,811 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 122 knots, which may have been due to various factors such as wind resistance or the aircraft's weight. Despite this, the touchdown speed of 107 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -112 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from 150°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and improve its alignment with the runway. As a result, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the aircraft landed within the designated touchdown zone.
The total landing distance of 1,512 meters was 40% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot executed a well-planned and controlled approach, taking into account the wind conditions and the aircraft's performance characteristics. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and brought it to a stop safely.
Overall, the landing was a success, and the high score of 97.5% reflects the pilot's skill and experience in executing a precise and controlled approach and landing.
