Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,357 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 251 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Embraer E175, then departed from runway 30R at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (KMSP). The takeoff distance was 1,368 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 24°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 300°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile northwest of KMSP. The climb started from an altitude of 1,859 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 30,242 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,384 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 76 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 1 mile northwest of the North Star Ranch Airport (MY66), and it lasted for 12 minutes, covering a distance of 185 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 6 miles northwest of the Warroad International Memorial Airport (KRRT) and lasted for 15 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 29,583 feet above sea level to 2,137 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,447 feet. The descent covered a distance of 86 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 36 at the Winnipeg / James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG) was made from the south, heading 9.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,346 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 36 at CYWG was successful, with a touchdown distance of 253 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was fast, and the touchdown rate of -400 feet per minute was hard. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 20°. The total landing distance was 1,247 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 353 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 45 minutes. The aircraft used 1,442 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Embraer E175 aircraft successfully landed at Winnipeg / James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG) with a score of 95.6%. The final approach to runway 36 was initiated from the south, with a heading of 9.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,346 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, coming in at 138 knots. This may have been due to the aircraft's approach configuration or the pilot's decision to maintain a higher speed for a more stable approach.
The touchdown distance of 253 meters was within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and maintain a stable approach. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -400 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or jolt upon touchdown. This could be attributed to the aircraft's speed and the pilot's decision to maintain a higher speed during the approach.
Despite the slightly hard touchdown, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a gentle headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,247 meters was 37% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and avoided any deviations from the centerline.
Overall, the Embraer E175 aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency during the landing at CYWG, with a score of 95.6%. While there were some minor issues with the touchdown speed and rate, the pilot's overall performance was impressive, and the aircraft landed safely and smoothly.
