Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,501 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,501 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 245 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a FFX P180, then departed from runway 17 at LFMD Cannes-Mandelieu Airport. The takeoff distance was 539 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 115 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of Theoule-sur-Mer, France. The climb took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 26 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,006 feet above sea level to 30,248 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,242 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles north of Lorgues, France. This phase lasted for 19 minutes and covered a distance of 90 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 3 miles west of La Grave, France. The descent took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 67 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 31,003 feet above sea level to 2,907 feet above sea level, a decrease of 28,095 feet.
The final approach to runway 27 at LIMW Aosta Corrado Gex Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 276.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,116 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 100 knots and a touchdown distance of 246 meters. The touchdown rate was smooth at -116 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 674 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 190 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 55 minutes. The aircraft used 323 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed at LIMW Aosta Corrado Gex Airport, achieving a score of 99.8%. The final approach to runway 27 was conducted from the east, with the aircraft heading 276.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,116 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 100 knots, which was within the target range. The touchdown distance of 246 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the approach. The touchdown rate of -116 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting that the aircraft was brought to a gentle stop.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had accurately aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle headwind of 5 knots from a direction of 270°. There was no crosswind, which further contributed to the smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 674 meters was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's speed and descent rate to achieve a short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a gentle stop within a short distance. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the precision and control demonstrated throughout the approach and landing phases.
