Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,053 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,053 m of the 2,505 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 932 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, then departed from runway 07C at Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH). The takeoff distance was 1,251 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 29 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at 90 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 6 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Hong Kong International Airport, where the aircraft ascended from 1,038 feet above sea level to 40,712 feet above sea level, an increase of 39,675 feet in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 160 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 61 miles north of Pratas Island and lasted for 19 minutes, covering a distance of 1,396 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered the enroute descent phase, which started 13 miles southwest of Miyakejima Airport. The descent from 40,061 feet above sea level to 1,470 feet above sea level, a decrease of 38,591 feet, took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 120 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34R at Narita International Airport (RJAA) was made from the southeast, heading 330.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,322 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 34R, which had a length of 2,505 meters, was successful, with a touchdown point 505 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 123 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -266 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots at 10 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The total landing distance was 1,961 meters, which accounted for 78% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 1,688 nautical miles and took 62 minutes to complete, using 21,393 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft successfully landed at RJAA Narita International Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its landing procedure. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 330.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,322 feet above ground level (agl). This approach angle and distance allowed the pilots to maintain a good visual reference of the runway and its surroundings.
Upon reaching the runway threshold, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 131 knots, which is considered good. The touchdown point was located 505 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight over-run. However, the touchdown speed of 123 knots was still within acceptable limits, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the landing.
The landing rate of -266 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating that the aircraft touched down with a moderate amount of deceleration. This is not uncommon, especially when landing on a runway with a relatively long length of 2,505 meters. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 6 knots from a direction of 10°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. These conditions contributed to a smooth and stable landing.
The total landing distance of 1,961 meters was 78% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the deceleration phase after touchdown.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 777-200ER at RJAA Narita International Airport was a successful one, with the pilots demonstrating a high level of skill and proficiency in their landing procedure.
