Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,312 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 555 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an RJ85, then departed from runway 17R at Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,264 meters, which was 31% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 139 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 10°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 23°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was 4 knots. After departing from Lyon, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the Colombier-Saugnieu area. The climb took 24 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,819 feet above sea level to 30,037 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,219 feet. The distance covered during this period was 128 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Passerano Marmorito in Italy. This phase lasted for 14 minutes and covered a distance of 102 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started overhead Lumezzane in Italy. The descent took 11 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 30,089 feet above sea level to 8,964 feet above sea level, a decrease of 21,125 feet. The distance covered during this period was 68 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of Albignasego in Italy. This phase lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 15 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 1 mile south of Vescovana in Italy. The descent took 10 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 8,746 feet above sea level to 1,293 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,453 feet. The distance covered during this period was 31 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04R at Venice Marco Polo Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 42.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,278 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 04R, which had a length of 3,312 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 116 knots. The touchdown point was 98 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 105 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -271 feet per minute.
The total landing distance was 933 meters, which was 28% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 354 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 78 minutes. The aircraft used 2,406 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft in question, an RJ85, successfully landed at LIPZ Venice Marco Polo Airport, achieving a score of 93.5%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 42.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing on runway 04R, the aircraft demonstrated good control, with a threshold height that was satisfactory. The threshold speed of 116 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown point was located 98 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 105 knots was good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the landing.
However, the touchdown rate of -271 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly higher-than-desired rate of descent during the final stages of the landing. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway during the touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 180°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 3 knots, which is relatively minimal and should not have significantly impacted the landing.
The total landing distance of 933 meters was 28% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to land smoothly and efficiently, with a good rollout alignment. The runway rollout alignment was indeed very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the post-landing phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and a relatively short landing distance. However, the fair touchdown rate and minor deviation from the touchdown zone are areas for improvement.
