Improve the pattern downwind leg
The 45-degrees-behind-the-wing cue assumes you can turn your head and use peripheral vision. Downwind spacing cues like "put the wingtip halfway up the strut" assume a fixed, known eyepoint. Neither survives a monitor unmodified. If you fly on a fixed monitor, stop pretending and fly a numbers-based circuit.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach that landed joined below the 300 ft gate, after a go-around. The gate assessed on the earlier approach is not shown - it was not the landing's.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,471 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,317 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 53 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, a P180 FFX, then departed from runway 06 at Vnukovo International Airport (UUWW). The takeoff distance was 1,912 feet, which accounted for 17% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 110 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 74 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 122 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. The aircraft then entered a right-hand pattern from runway 06, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 54 seconds.
The right-hand pattern crosswind leg was completed in 12 seconds, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then proceeded to the downwind turn, which covered a distance of 2 nautical miles at an angle of 45 degrees to the runway. The downwind leg itself was short, lasting only 6 seconds and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The base leg turn was another 2 nautical miles, with the aircraft turning at an angle of 180 degrees to the runway. However, the pilot decided to execute a go-around, climbing to an altitude of 37 feet above ground level. The final approach was made from the southwest, heading 64 degrees, and the aircraft touched down on runway 06.
The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 918 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 92 knots, which was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate was excellent at -51 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, being 20 feet off the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 71 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 124 degrees.
The crosswind was 10 knots, and the headwind was 7 knots. The total landing distance was 3,798 feet, which accounted for 33% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned, being 29 feet off the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took only 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 12 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 12 minutes. The aircraft used 211 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, identified as FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed at UUWW Vnukovo International Airport on runway 06. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 64.0° at an altitude of 68 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft maintained a steady descent and touched down on the runway at a speed of 92 knots, which was within the acceptable range.
The touchdown point was located 918 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. However, the touchdown speed and rate were both excellent, with a rate of -51 feet per minute, demonstrating a smooth and controlled landing. The threshold height at 55 feet agl was slightly above the target, but the threshold speed of 119 knots was good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 71°F and wind speeds of 12 knots at 124°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance was 3,798 feet, which accounted for approximately 33% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centerline, indicating a minor deviation from the intended path. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a score of 90.5%.
