Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,786 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 15 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Cotswold Airport, located in Gloucestershire, England, the Kodiak 100 aircraft began its takeoff roll on runway 26. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 68 kt, achieving lift-off in a distance of 411 meters, which represented 25% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15 °C, with a light wind of 1 kt blowing from the west.
As the aircraft climbed away from Cotswold Airport, it transitioned into an enroute climb phase, ascending from an initial altitude of 799 ft above sea level to 974 ft asl. This climb phase was notable for its rapid ascent, with an increase of 175 ft in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. Following this climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, maintaining a steady altitude for 3 minutes while covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. This cruise phase took place approximately 1 mile north of Crudwell, located in Wiltshire, England.
As the aircraft began its final approach to runway 26 at Cotswold Airport, it was established on a heading of 262.0°, approximately 1 nautical mile from the threshold. The aircraft touched down on the runway with a touchdown distance of 13 meters, achieving a touchdown speed of 45 kt and a touchdown rate of -197 fpm. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating a precise and controlled approach. The total flight distance was 6 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 4 minutes, and the aircraft consumed 16 kg of fuel during the flight.
The final approach to runway 26 at EGBP Cotswold Airport from the east was executed with precision, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 262.0° at 1 nm and 142 ft above ground level. The approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height achieved. As the aircraft descended onto the runway, the threshold speed of 46 kt was well below the target, necessitating careful control to avoid stalling. The pilot's skillful handling ensured a smooth touchdown.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was impressive, with a touchdown distance of 13 m and a speed of 45 kt, both of which were within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -197 fpm was also good, indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 1 kt at 269°, contributed to a relatively calm and stable environment for the landing.
The overall performance of the landing was excellent, with a score of 95.3%. The pilot's ability to maintain control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown phases was evident, and the aircraft's handling characteristics were well-suited to the conditions. The landing was a testament to the pilot's skill and experience, and the aircraft's capabilities.
