Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,700 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 315 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
This flight was conducted in a Vision Jet aircraft, which began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Christchurch International Airport (NZCH). The taxiing process took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 11, with a takeoff distance of 366 meters, which accounted for 22% of the runway's length. The liftoff speed was recorded at 91 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 89 degrees. The crosswind and headwind components were both 2 knots. The enroute climb began overhead NZCH Christchurch International Airport, where the aircraft ascended from 1,149 feet above sea level to 10,195 feet, an increase of 9,046 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 5 miles south of Tai Tapu, where the aircraft descended from 10,034 feet to 902 feet, a decrease of 9,132 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 29 at NZCH Christchurch International Airport was conducted from the south-east, with a heading of 310.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 778 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 29 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 314 meters, which was 27% of the runway's length. However, the touchdown speed was recorded at 76 knots, which was considered fast. The touchdown rate was perfect at -22 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions during landing were characterized by a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 223 degrees, with a crosswind component of 3 knots and a headwind component of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 463 meters, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight distance was 35 nautical miles, which was completed in 17 minutes, and the aircraft used 0 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Vision Jet has successfully landed at Christchurch International Airport, achieving a high score of 97.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south east, heading 310.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 778 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed on runway 29, which has a length of 1,700 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly too high at 86 knots. However, the touchdown distance was good, measuring 314 meters. The touchdown speed of 76 knots was somewhat fast, but the touchdown rate of -22 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots from 223°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 3 knots and no headwind. The aircraft's alignment with the runway during touchdown was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also satisfactory.
Overall, the Vision Jet's landing performance was impressive, with a total landing distance of 463 meters, which is only 27% of the runway length. This indicates a high degree of control and precision during the landing phase. The pilot's skills and the aircraft's capabilities have resulted in a safe and efficient landing at Christchurch International Airport.
