Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 300 ft gate: centreline 11.7° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,786 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 15 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Cotswold Airport, Kemble, Gloucestershire, England, the Kodiak 100 aircraft began its takeoff roll on runway 26. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 78 kt, clearing the ground at a distance of 586 m, which accounted for 36% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 20 °C and a gentle wind of 3 kt from 224°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind component.
As the aircraft climbed away from Cotswold Airport, it transitioned into an enroute climb phase, reaching an altitude of 995 ft asl from an initial height of 815 ft asl in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nm. The climb was followed by a brief enroute level cruise phase, during which the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 3 minutes while covering 4 nm. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 26 at Cotswold Airport, descending from an altitude of 74 ft agl and aligning itself with the runway heading of 260.0°. The landing was executed smoothly, with a touchdown speed of 45 kt and a touchdown distance of 12 m, which was well within the available runway length of 1,618 m.
The total landing distance of 178 m, accounting for 11% of the runway length, was satisfactory, and the runway rollout alignment was excellent. The aircraft's performance was further highlighted by its efficient fuel usage, with a total fuel consumption of -62 kg over the 7 nm flight distance, which was completed in 4 minutes. The local weather conditions remained consistent throughout the flight, with a temperature of 20 °C and a gentle wind of 3 kt from 224°.
The aircraft touched down on runway 26 at EGBP Cotswold Airport with a smooth touchdown rate of -123 fpm, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown speed of 45 kt was within the target range, and the touchdown distance of 12 m was good, demonstrating a high degree of control and precision. The threshold height was also satisfactory, allowing the pilot to maintain a safe margin above the runway surface.
As the aircraft rolled out, it remained very well-aligned with the centreline, with only a slight deviation of 5.0 m. This was a notable achievement, given the presence of a 2 kt headwind and a 2 kt crosswind, which could have potentially affected the aircraft's stability and directional control. The total landing distance of 178 m was a mere 11% of the runway length, indicating a high degree of efficiency and control.
The overall performance of the landing was impressive, with a score of 95.0% reflecting the pilot's skill and attention to detail. The approach quality was good, with a stable and controlled descent, and the touchdown characteristics were well within the target range. The only minor deviation was the slight misalignment on touchdown, but this was quickly corrected during the rollout phase, resulting in a very good runway rollout alignment.
