Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,325 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,325 ft of the 11,080 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,408 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A320 taxied from the parking area to runway 28L at KSFO, San Francisco International Airport, covering 2 nm in 7 minutes.
During the departure roll on runway 28L, the aircraft used 6,267 ft of runway, representing 57 % of the available length, and lifted off at 165 kt. Ambient conditions were 67 °F with a wind of 9 kt from 293°, including a 1 kt cross-wind component and a 9 kt head-wind component.
Climb commenced overhead San Bruno, rising from 978 ft asl to 33,011 ft asl, an altitude gain of 32,032 ft achieved in 17 minutes while covering 108 nm.
Cruise began 4 miles southeast of O23 Pinnacles Ranch Airport, Paicines, and continued for 12 minutes, during which the aircraft flew 90 nm at level altitude.
Descent was initiated 7 miles east of KLOS Lost Hills Airport, Lost Hills, descending from 32,847 ft asl to 1,404 ft asl, a loss of 31,444 ft over 24 minutes and a distance of 130 nm.
The final approach to runway 25L at KLAX, Los Angeles International Airport, was flown from the east on a heading of 263.0°, intercepting the glide path at 4 nm and 1,262 ft agl.
Landing on runway 25L, which is 11,080 ft long, was executed with a threshold speed of 142 kt, slightly above target. Touchdown occurred 1,401 ft down the runway at 135 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 254 fpm and very good alignment.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 5,043 ft, representing 46 % of the runway, and alignment remained very good throughout the deceleration phase.
After exiting the runway, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, traveling 1 nm in 4 minutes.
In total, the flight covered 338 nm, lasted 67 minutes, and consumed 5,771 lb of fuel.
The final approach to runway 25L at KLAX was flown from the east on a heading of 263.0° at 4 nm and 1,262 ft agl, with a temperature of 73 °F, wind 4 kt from 240°, a 1 kt cross-wind component and a 3 kt head-wind component. The aircraft was aligned with the centreline of the 11,080-ft runway and the overall score for the landing was 98.6%.
At threshold the height was reported as good and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 142 kt. The flare was initiated from this altitude and the aircraft continued the descent toward the aim point.
Touchdown occurred 1,401 ft down the runway, a distance described as good, with a touchdown speed a little fast at 135 kt and a touchdown rate fair at minus 254 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was very good and the total landing distance measured 5,043 ft, representing 46 % of the runway length.
Rollout alignment remained very good throughout the deceleration phase.
Refine speed management on the final approach to achieve the target threshold speed and reduce the touchdown speed, which will also improve the vertical rate at touchdown. Maintaining a slightly slower, well-stabilised approach will help bring the touchdown rate closer to the optimal range.
