MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Departure
Make small rudder corrections against a point at the far end to hold the centreline.
What happened: During the ground roll you drifted 24 m off the runway centreline.
Watch for: Watch runway alignment against the centreline, correcting with small rudder inputs.
See Departure Roll
Arrival
Reduce power earlier on final to bring threshold speed back to 125 kt.
What happened: You crossed the threshold at 154 kt against a target of 125 kt, and touchdown ended up well past the normal point. Carrying excess threshold speed usually carries the touchdown long as the aircraft floats before settling.
Watch for: Airspeed indicator, targeting 125 kt at the threshold.
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 500 ft gate: glideslope 2.0° against the runway's 3°.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,595 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,595 m of the 3,021 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 809 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The MD-83 taxied from the parking area to runway 28L at KPDX Portland International Airport in 5 minutes, covering approximately 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 28L, the aircraft used 1,967 m of runway, representing 59 % of the available length, and lifted off at 173 kt; ambient temperature was 21 °C with a wind of 2 kt from 350°, giving a 2 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
Climb commenced 1 mile east of Bridgeton, Oregon, with the aircraft ascending from 963 ft asl to 31,706 ft asl, an increase of 30,743 ft achieved in 18 minutes while covering 127 nm.
A level cruise segment began 8 miles east of CSYF Silva Bay, British Columbia, lasting 4 minutes and traversing 14 nm.
Descent started 2 miles southwest of Inglewood-Finn Hill, Washington, with a reduction from 31,977 ft asl to 2,400 ft asl, a loss of 29,578 ft over 17 minutes and a distance of 109 nm.
The final approach to runway 08L at CYVR Vancouver International Airport was conducted from the west on a heading of 101.0°, at 4 nm and 1,304 ft agl.
Landing on runway 08L, which is 3,027 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 154 kt; touchdown was 400 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 137 kt, with a smooth touchdown rate of minus 139 fpm and perfect runway alignment. Local weather reported a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 13 kt from 110°, providing a 2 kt cross-wind and a 13 kt head-wind component.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,522 m, equal to 50 % of the runway, and the aircraft’s centreline alignment was offset by 8.1 m.
Taxi-in to the parking area from the runway required 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 258 nm, lasted 49 minutes, and consumed 2,833 kg of fuel.
The MD-83 conducted the final approach to runway 08L at CYVR Vancouver International Airport from the west, tracking a heading of 101.0° at 4 nm and 1,304 ft agl. Local weather was 15 °C with wind 13 kt from 110°, providing a 2 kt cross-wind component and a 13 kt head-wind.
The threshold height was good, while the threshold speed was too high at 154 kt.
Touchdown occurred 400 m beyond the touchdown zone; the touchdown speed was fast at 137 kt and the touchdown rate was smooth at minus 139 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
Total landing distance measured 1,522 m, representing 50 % of the 3,027 m runway, and rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.1 m from the centreline.
Reduce the threshold and touchdown speeds to bring the touchdown point within the designated zone and to lessen the rollout deviation. Adjusting speed management will also help keep the rollout alignment closer to centreline.
