Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,230 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,230 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 143 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The XCub aircraft departed from runway 25 at EDX1 Hoherodskopf, a small airfield in Germany. The takeoff distance was 348 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 70 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 0°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 166°.
After a short takeoff roll, the aircraft began its enroute level cruise, which started 1 mile west of the airfield. This phase of the flight lasted for 7 minutes and covered a distance of 13 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 1 mile south east of Echzell, a nearby town in Germany. The descent was a steep one, with the aircraft losing 1,259 feet in altitude over a distance of 3 nautical miles in just 3 minutes.
The final approach to runway 36 at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 358.0° at an altitude of 254 feet above ground level. The landing was made on a runway that was 1,230 meters long, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was slightly below the target speed, but the touchdown distance was good at 140 meters. The touchdown speed was also good at 43 knots, but the touchdown rate was fair at -238 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The total landing distance was 338 meters, which accounted for 27% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 167°. The aircraft was experiencing a slight tailwind of 1 knot.
Overall, the flight was a successful one, with the aircraft covering a total distance of 18 nautical miles in 11 minutes. The fuel consumption was 6 kilograms, which was a relatively low amount considering the distance flown.
The XCub aircraft successfully landed at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield, achieving a score of 98.4%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 358.0° at 0 nm and 254 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft landed on runway 36, which has a length of 1,230 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 51 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 140 meters, and the touchdown speed of 43 knots was also within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate of -238 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have been brought down to the ground more smoothly. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 167°. The crosswind component was negligible, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 338 meters was only 27% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop quickly after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the XCub aircraft demonstrating good control and precision during the approach and landing phases.
