Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,859 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,859 m of the 2,118 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,240 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Embraer E175 aircraft took off from runway 16L at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (KSEA) after a 9-minute taxiing period that covered 3 nautical miles. The takeoff distance was 47 meters, which is just 1% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 139 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 70°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead SeaTac, Washington. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,434 feet above sea level to 16,351 feet above sea level, an increase of 14,916 feet, in just 13 minutes and covering a distance of 46 nautical miles.
After reaching the desired cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 28 nautical miles. This phase began 15 miles south of Lawson Airpark Port Angeles, Washington.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent, which started 8 miles south of Sooke, British Columbia, Canada. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 15,976 feet above sea level to 1,814 feet above sea level, a decrease of 14,162 feet, in just 10 minutes and covering a distance of 27 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at Victoria International Airport (CYYJ) was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 108.0° at an altitude of 1,713 feet above ground level and a distance of 3 nautical miles from the runway threshold. However, the landing was not without issues, as the threshold height was significantly above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 176 knots.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed was fast at 134 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -240 feet per minute. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 50.6 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 70°, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,722 meters, which is 81% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 48.8 meters from the centreline. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 109 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 42 minutes. The aircraft used 946 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Embraer E175 aircraft experienced a challenging landing at Victoria International Airport (CYYJ) on runway 09. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 108.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,713 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was subpar, with a score of 47.5%.
One of the primary issues was the significant discrepancy between the actual and target threshold heights. The threshold height at 89 ft agl was substantially above the target, which could have affected the aircraft's approach and landing performance. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 176 kt, indicating that the aircraft may have been experiencing difficulties in slowing down during the approach.
The touchdown point was also a concern, as it was located more than 50% of the available runway length away from the threshold. This excessive use of runway length could have been due to the aircraft's high touchdown speed of 134 kt, which was faster than the recommended speed. The touchdown rate of -240 fpm was fair, but it was not sufficient to compensate for the high touchdown speed.
The runway touchdown position was also misaligned by 50.6 meters from the centerline, which could have made the landing more challenging. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 7 kt at 70°, may have contributed to the difficulties experienced during the landing. The crosswind component was relatively low at 4 kt, but the headwind component was 6 kt, which could have affected the aircraft's approach and landing performance.
The total landing distance of 1,722 meters was 81% of the available runway length, indicating that the aircraft had a significant amount of runway remaining after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 48.8 meters from the centerline, which could have made the landing more challenging and increased the risk of veering off the runway.
Overall, the Embraer E175 aircraft experienced a difficult landing at Victoria International Airport, with several performance issues that could have been caused by a combination of factors, including the aircraft's performance, weather conditions, and pilot error.
