Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,640 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,640 m of the 2,443 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 507 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by Vueling, with the aircraft registration EC-MGZ. The journey began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 24L at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, a major airport in Spain.
The takeoff distance was 1,499 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 156 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, a wind speed of 7 knots from 229°, and a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
After takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile southwest of the airport and reached an altitude of 34,850 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 105 nautical miles and took 20 minutes to complete. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 68 minutes and covered a distance of 483 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase began overhead Gesualdo, Italy, and involved a descent from 33,815 feet to 18,525 feet above sea level, a decrease of 15,290 feet in just 5 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The descent phase continued, with the aircraft descending from 18,114 feet to 5,431 feet above sea level, a decrease of 12,683 feet in 7 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 17 nautical miles.
The final descent phase began 17 miles northeast of Mola di Bari, Italy, and involved a descent from 4,746 feet to 3,800 feet above sea level, a decrease of 946 feet in 2 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final descent phase began 9 miles north of Mola di Bari, Italy, and involved a descent from 3,795 feet to 1,236 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,559 feet in 3 minutes. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 25 at LIBD Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport, a major airport in Italy.
The final approach was made from the east, heading 250.0°, and the aircraft touched down on the runway 50 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 135 knots, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -104 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13°C, a wind speed of 6 knots from 260°, and a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,518 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft then began its taxiing period from the runway to the parking, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 721 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 133 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,064 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
Aircraft Vueling EC-MGZ successfully landed at LIBD Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport, showcasing a high level of precision and control. The final approach to runway 25 was executed from the east, with the aircraft heading 250.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,083 feet above ground level (agl). This approach was likely conducted under visual flight rules (VFR) given the good visibility conditions.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 50 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilot maintained control and managed the descent effectively. The touchdown rate of -104 feet per minute (fpm) was also smooth, suggesting a well-executed landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 13°C and a gentle headwind of 6 knots from a direction of 260°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, which further contributed to the smooth landing. The runway length of 2,443 meters was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 1,518 meters, which accounted for 62% of the available runway.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and alignment during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing of Vueling EC-MGZ at LIBD Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport was a success, with a score of 99.7% reflecting the high level of precision and control demonstrated by the pilot.
