Track the centreline
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 1,000 ft gate: centreline 1.3° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,671 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 574 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F taxied to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport and commenced the departure roll. The aircraft accelerated through a take-off distance of 869 m, representing 24 % of the runway, and lifted off at 154 kt. Ambient conditions were 15 °C with a wind from 270° at 13 kt, including a 4 kt cross-wind component and a 13 kt head-wind component.
During the en-route climb, the flight began overhead the departure airport and rose from 1,012 ft asl to 1,468 ft asl, an altitude gain of 456 ft achieved in 1 minute while covering 3 nm.
Level cruise commenced approximately 3 mi south of NZAA and was maintained for 4 minutes, during which the aircraft traversed 11 nm at cruise altitude.
The descent phase started from 1,373 ft agl and proceeded to 60 ft agl in 98 seconds, meeting the stabilisation gate criteria for a controlled approach.
On final approach to runway 23L, the aircraft aligned with the runway centreline under weather of 12 °C, wind from 278° at 13 kt, a 6 kt cross-wind and a 12 kt head-wind component.
Landing was executed on runway 23L, whose total length is 3,671 m. The threshold speed recorded was 153 kt. Touchdown occurred 172 m beyond the designated touchdown zone at a speed of 138 kt, with a smooth touchdown rate of minus 115 fpm. The touchdown point was offset by 7.2 m from the centreline. The total landing distance measured 1,039 m, equivalent to 28 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was judged very good.
Runway rollout concluded without incident, and the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 20 nm, required 8 minutes of flight time, and consumed 1,475 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 777F conducted the final approach to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport, descending from 1,373 ft agl to 60 ft agl in 98 seconds. The approach was assessed as unstable at the 1,000 ft gate: off the centreline, and the aircraft was scored on the stabilisation gates.
At threshold the aircraft presented a good threshold height and a good threshold speed of 153 kt, matching the expected parameters for the landing configuration.
Touchdown occurred 172 m beyond the touchdown zone with a good touchdown speed of 138 kt. The touchdown rate was smooth at minus 115 fpm, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.2 m from the centreline.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,039 m, representing 28 % of the 3,671 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was very good.
Improve centreline tracking to achieve a stabilised approach and reduce the lateral deviation at touchdown; the remaining parameters are within acceptable limits and require only minor refinement.
