Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,738 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 381 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Key West International Airport (KEYW). This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 09, with the aircraft taking off after covering 59% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 863 meters, and the liftoff speed was 128 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 29°C and winds of 8 knots at 80°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind was 7 knots. The enroute climb started over Stock Island, Florida, where the aircraft ascended from 847 feet above sea level to 35,300 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,453 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began over Southern Ranch Airport Clewiston, Florida, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering 355 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent over Helena, Georgia, where it decreased its altitude from 35,100 feet above sea level to 6,360 feet above sea level, a decrease of 28,740 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 107 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 4 miles east of Pinetree Heliport Cumming, Georgia, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. However, it soon began its descent again, this time from 6,145 feet above sea level to 5,112 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,032 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered another level cruise phase, starting 3 miles north of Stockbridge, Georgia, and lasting for 5 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. It then began its descent once more, this time from 5,131 feet above sea level to 2,315 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,816 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27L at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) took place from the east, with the aircraft heading 270.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,280 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 27L, which had a length of 2,738 meters, was successful, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 130 knots.
The touchdown distance was 380 meters, and the touchdown speed was 123 knots, both of which were considered good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -418 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 23°C and winds of 8 knots at 250°.
The total landing distance was 1,296 meters, which was 47% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 612 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 64 minutes. The aircraft used 4,149 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed on runway 27L at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) with a score of 97.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,280 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 123 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 130 knots. The touchdown distance of 380 meters was also within the expected range, indicating a well-executed landing. The touchdown rate, however, was slightly hard at -418 feet per minute (fpm), which may require some attention to ensure a smoother touchdown in future landings.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a gentle headwind of 8 knots at 250°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, which made the landing even more manageable. The runway length of 2,738 meters was sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 1,296 meters, which accounted for only 47% of the available runway.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. Similarly, the runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was executed well, with the aircraft touching down safely and smoothly on the runway. However, the hard touchdown rate may require some attention to ensure a smoother touchdown in future landings.
