Improve the rollout
A crosswind landing is a geometry problem. The air mass you're flying in is moving sideways across the runway, and you need your ground track down the centreline with your wheels aligned to it at the moment of contact. There are two techniques that will help, the crab and the sideslip.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,982 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 401 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, an ATR 72, then departed from runway 22R at EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport. The takeoff distance was 880 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 124 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 14 knots at a direction of 260 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 12 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile west of EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport, rising from an altitude of 357 meters above sea level to 5,980 meters above sea level, an increase of 5,623.9 meters, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 49 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles east of Tuulos, Finland, and lasted for 86 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 270 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 2 miles east of Simo, Finland, and lasted for 13 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 5,736 meters above sea level to 722 meters above sea level, a decrease of 5,014.2 meters, and covered a distance of 42 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 11 miles southwest of Rovaniemi, Finland, and lasted for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 03 at EFRO Rovaniemi Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 35.0 degrees at an altitude of 353.2 meters above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 03 at EFRO Rovaniemi Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 399 meters and a touchdown speed of 111 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was firm at -1.6 meters per second, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.6 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -4 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 11 knots at a direction of 320 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,213 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 75.6 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 383 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 142 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 1,364 kilograms.
The ATR 72 aircraft successfully landed at EFRO Rovaniemi Airport, achieving an overall score of 85.9%. The final approach to runway 03 was initiated from the south west, with a heading of 35.0° at an altitude of 353.2 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 123 knots, which was significantly above the target threshold speed. However, the touchdown distance of 399 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 111 knots was slightly faster than desired, but the firm touchdown rate of -1.6 meters per second suggests that the aircraft was well under control.
The landing was conducted in challenging weather conditions, with a temperature of -4°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 320°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft maintained a stable approach and touchdown.
However, there were some areas for improvement during the landing. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 5.6 meters, which may have been due to the crosswind component. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned from the centerline by 75.6 meters, indicating that the aircraft may have drifted off course during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there are opportunities for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and runway alignment.
