Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,651 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 471 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 18 at Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport (LFLB), where the Cessna C182 aircraft took off with a distance of 593 meters, which is 36% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 68 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 10 knots at a direction of 12°.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand pattern, it demonstrated impressive agility, completing the entry in less than 1 nautical mile in 15 seconds. The crosswind leg was also executed efficiently, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile in 42 seconds. The pattern downwind turn was notable for its precise angle to the runway, which was 67.3°, and the downwind leg itself covered a distance of 3 nautical miles in 88 seconds.
The base leg turn was another highlight of the flight, with the aircraft maintaining a precise angle to the runway of 41.2°. The base leg itself was completed in less than 1 nautical mile in 16 seconds. The final turn was also executed smoothly, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles in 50 seconds.
The final approach to runway 18 was made from the north, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 175.0° at an altitude of 90 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a distance of 470 meters, which is a good distance considering the runway length. However, the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 85 knots, and the threshold speed was also high at 100 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,164 meters, which is 71% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll. The taxiing to the parking area took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight was a success, with the pilot demonstrating impressive skills and control of the aircraft throughout the flight. The total flight distance was 10 nautical miles, and the flight used 3 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna C182 aircraft successfully landed at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport, with a final approach score of 84.7%. The pilot navigated the aircraft towards runway 18 from the north, heading 175.0° at an altitude of 90 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles (nm) from the runway.
Upon landing, the pilot achieved a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 100 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to slow down the aircraft more efficiently before touching down. The touchdown distance of 470 meters was considered good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing.
However, the touchdown speed of 85 knots was excessively fast, which may have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and could have resulted in a longer rollout distance. The touchdown rate of -197 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating that the pilot managed to slow down the aircraft effectively after touchdown.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft onto the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 10 knots at 11°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 10 knots, which may have contributed to the high touchdown speed.
The total landing distance of 1,164 meters was 71% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot managed to stop the aircraft within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the pilot demonstrated some areas for improvement, such as slowing down the aircraft before touchdown and reducing the touchdown speed, the landing was generally successful, and the pilot's skills and experience were evident throughout the maneuver.
