Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,702 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,702 m of the 3,187 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,091 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Rovaniemi Airport, the Airbus A320 began its journey with a taxiing period of 7 minutes, covering 2 nautical miles to reach the runway. The aircraft then took off from runway 21, utilizing 985 meters, or 33% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 142 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 19°C, with a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 210°, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and an 11-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from 1,470 feet above sea level to 38,327 feet, an increase of 36,857 feet in 22 minutes, covering 126 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which started 6 miles southwest of Rantsila and lasted 22 minutes, covering 143 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 38,616 feet to 3,575 feet, a decrease of 35,041 feet in 21 minutes, covering 109 nautical miles. The descent phase was punctuated by a brief level cruise, which started 7 miles northwest of Kaarela and lasted 5 minutes, covering 17 nautical miles. The final descent phase began overhead Kauniainen and resulted in a decrease of 1,666 feet in 3 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles.
The Airbus A320 then commenced its final approach to runway 04R at Helsinki Vantaa Airport, with a heading of 47.0° and an altitude of 1,269 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 670 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 121 knots was within acceptable limits, but the touchdown rate of -219 feet per minute was slightly higher than desired. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment also deviated from the centerline. The total landing distance of 1,617 meters, or 51% of the runway, was within acceptable limits. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering 1 nautical mile in 6 minutes. The total flight distance was 409 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 86 minutes and a fuel consumption of 3,404 kilograms.
The final approach to runway 04R at EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport from the south west was initiated at 4 nm and 1,269 ft above ground level, with a heading of 47.0°. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 56 ft above ground level, slightly above the target. However, the threshold speed of 144 kt was well above the target, indicating a potential for a long rollout.
The aircraft touched down 670 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 121 kt, which was good. The touchdown rate of -219 fpm was fair, indicating a moderate deceleration. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.6 m from the centreline, which was also reflected in the runway rollout alignment. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 11 °C and a wind of 19 kt at 10°, contributed to a crosswind of 12 kt and a headwind of 15 kt.
The total landing distance of 1,617 m was 51% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing. However, the misalignment of the touchdown and rollout positions from the centreline resulted in a lower overall score of 82.7%. The landing performance was affected by the high threshold speed and the significant misalignment, which could be addressed through adjustments to the approach and landing procedures.
