Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: no landing flap set, off the centreline and wings not level.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,015 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 639 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Piper Aerostar 600 with the registration NI22PC, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KSFZ North Central State Airport. This process took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 23, with a takeoff distance of 1,836 feet, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 105 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it reached an altitude of 2,873 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,097 feet from the initial altitude of 776 feet. This climb took place over a distance of 2 nautical miles and was completed in just 1 minute. The enroute climb started overhead KSFZ North Central State Airport in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which lasted for 14 minutes and covered a distance of 47 nautical miles. This phase of the flight took place 1 mile south of Lincoln, Rhode Island. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 1 mile northwest of 2B1 Cape Cod Airport in Marston Mills, Massachusetts. The descent took place from an altitude of 3,368 feet above sea level to 187 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,181 feet, over a distance of 7 nautical miles and in 3 minutes.
The final approach to runway 06 at KHYA Cape Cod Gateway Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 49.0 degrees at an altitude of 133 feet above ground level. The landing was made on the runway, which had a length of 5,015 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 94 knots. The touchdown distance was 628 feet, which was 32% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 78 knots, and the touchdown rate was -168 feet per minute, both of which were good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 48 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 10 degrees. The crosswind was 6 knots, and the headwind was 8 knots. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, which took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 59 nautical miles and took 24 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 74 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, a Piper Aerostar 600 with the registration NI22PC, successfully landed at KHYA Cape Cod Gateway Airport on runway 06. The pilot demonstrated exceptional skill and control throughout the final approach, achieving a score of 99.1%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southwest, heading 49.0° at an altitude of 133 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon reaching the runway, the pilot executed a smooth touchdown, with a threshold speed of 94 knots, which is well within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 628 feet was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the landing. The touchdown speed of 78 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -168 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 48°F and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 10°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots. Despite these wind conditions, the pilot was able to maintain perfect runway touchdown alignment, which is a testament to their skill and experience.
The total landing distance of 1,614 feet was 32% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This indicates that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the landing, and had executed a smooth and controlled rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability throughout the landing.
Overall, the landing was a textbook example of a well-executed and controlled approach and landing. The pilot's skill and experience were evident throughout the procedure, and the aircraft was brought to a safe and controlled stop on the runway.
