Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 693 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 693 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 69 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 06 at KMTP Montauk Airport, where the aircraft, a Piper Aerostar 600 with the registration NI22PC, took off with a takeoff distance of 404 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 91 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 279 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 4 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots.
After taking off, the aircraft entered a right-hand pattern from runway 06, completing the turn in less than 1 nautical mile in 58 seconds. The subsequent right-hand pattern crosswind turn was completed in less than 1 nautical mile in 13 seconds. The pilot then initiated a pattern downwind turn, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles at an angle of 54.3 degrees to the runway. The downwind leg itself was 3 nautical miles long and took 63 seconds to complete.
The pilot then turned onto the base leg, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles at an angle of 56.0 degrees to the runway. The base leg was 1 nautical mile long and took 40 seconds to complete. The final turn was completed in less than 1 nautical mile in 38 seconds, setting up the aircraft for a final approach to runway 06 from the southwest at a heading of 47.0 degrees and an altitude of 241 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 06 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 71 knots and a distance of 68 meters. The touchdown rate was fair at -241 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 280 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 269 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The total flight distance was 9 nautical miles, and the flight took 7 minutes to complete, using 9 kilograms of fuel.
The aircraft, a Piper Aerostar 600 with the registration NI22PC, successfully landed at Montauk Airport (KMTP) with a score of 95.9%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 47.0° at 1 nautical mile and 241 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise landing on runway 06, which has a length of 693 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 75 knots. However, the touchdown distance was good at 68 meters, and the touchdown speed of 71 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -241 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating a moderate rate of descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.4 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's approach. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 27°C, a wind speed of 4 knots from 280°, and a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance of 269 meters was 39% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
